Brochure for the Inverto 18B/18R Kendrick & Davis undated 10 pages fan-fold, approximately 3 5/8" x 6 1/4" This brochure was found with an Inverto 18R Deluxe set, frame number Z638F. This reference is provided through the courtesy of eBay user booneautorepair, who generously took the time to make good quality scans of all of the paperwork supplied with the tool sold in his recent auction. He has also allowed me to use the pictures from his auction listing. |
This is an updated version of the Inverto 18B/18R brochure ca. 1945-1952. Both are undated, but the content changes indicated that it is newer (based on comparison with other primary source materials). The use of the company name "Kendrick & Davis Co." indicates that this was likely printed before 1961, by which time the company name was Kendrick & Davis, Inc. It could have been before 1956, the last date I've found where the older company name was used.
The text on page 9 refers to "Invertos since 1945".
Call this one ca. 1945-1961.

In addition to the brochure, booneautorepair provided the only picture I've seen of the packaging K&D used for their staking tools. This is significant because the label asserts that the tool is an "Improved 1946" version. The 1946 date may indicate when the 18R Deluxe tool was introduced. It's also possible that the 18B frame, 18B tool, and the No. 540 friction jeweling attachment were introduced at this time, but the mention of the new "frame with open front" in the 1937 Hammel, Riglander catalog would seem to indicate that the new frame design was introduced around 10 years earlier. It's interesting to note that the picture on the label shows a frame with the cut-away base but it has a retrofit No. 540 jeweling attachment head. Also, it shows the older style roller removers. The actual tool has the No. 540 mounting features integrated into the frame (for use with a No. 540R friction jeweling attachment) and contains the newer Rex-style roller removers. These differences are consistent with K&D simply using the same box label for a long period of time, spanning the time when these features of the tool changed. Photo courtesy of eBay user booneautorepair. The label also describes the "No. 18R Inverto frame with friction jeweling equipment". Other references (including the brochure provided with this tool!) indicate that the frames in the No. 18B and No. 18R tools are the same. Perhaps this convergence happened after this label was produced. |
Cleaned up black and white images of each page of the brochure are posted below. The annotations for each page describe the differences between the contents of this brochure and the older version.

Changes in this newer version: Punches 121B & 122B deleted No. 130 Conical Burring Punch added, but listed as not included on page 4 of the newer version. Perhaps it was not included in the 18B sets. |

Changes in this newer version: Description of stump No. 99 changed to "For 16 size Elgin - B. W. Raymond" Punches 20A & 21A added. Stump 90A added. Punches 319 & 319A deleted. Punch & stump sets 320 & 320A deleted. Text for "Staking Tool Dies" added. |

Changes in newer version: Last line changed to "Use a series of light blows." |

Changes in newer version: Typo indicating that punch No. 87 was included corrected to show that it is not included. Layout of information for punches Nos 121, 121A, 122, and 122A is a bit confused: Headings for Nos 121A and 122A deleted, but sizes left on the line below. Heading for No. 122 moved over to above the value ".25" previously describing No. 121A. This change in size/numbering is confirmed in the K&D tools catalog of 1961. |

Changes in this newer version: Illustration of Nos. 305B & 305C removed. Text is identical to the older version and thus still contains the alphabetic references to the now missing illustration. That's a bit confusing... |
